Alex CHIKahrsa
Iā€™m here with Stephen Sutton, friend and contributor to CHIKARA in 15. Hi, Stephen! Feel free to introduce yourself to the CHIKARMY, let them know a little bit about yourself.

Stephen Sutton
thank you for having me
I’ve been wrestling fan for nineteen years (celebrating twenty years this september) and only been a fan of chikara for the past two years.

Alex CHIKahrsa
Wow, nearly 20 years!? That’s awesome! What was one of your earliest memories of wrestling?

Stephen Sutton
funny enough I still remember the first VHS and magazines that where bought

Alex CHIKahrsa
Oh, nice! WWF, or something else?

Stephen Sutton
it was a mixture of WWF and WCW

Alex CHIKahrsa
Awesome! And what was it like watching/reading about wrestling back then?

Stephen Sutton
at the time I didn’t have access to how it was being shown over here in the UK so my best mate let me borrow tapes he would get taped. I was always. When it came to reading all the magazines would be a month behind so it be a long read of the magazine

Alex CHIKahrsa
Ah, I gotcha. I’ll admit, I had the chance to just read a small handful of magazines back in the day myself haha. So, you mentioned you’ve been a fan of CHIKARA for just about two years. How did you first hear about CHIKARA?

Stephen Sutton
I heard about it back in 2009 on a UK podcast (which doesn’t run these days) as they started talking about King Of Trios and team uppercut

Alex CHIKahrsa
Nice! I heard KOT 2009 was a great event. Did you get a chance to watch any of the KOT shows from that year?

Stephen Sutton
yeah. When I was able to find it.

Alex CHIKahrsa
Cool, and what did you think of it?

Stephen Sutton
As it was the first time watching the promotion I was confused about what was going on in the promotion
my interest (in the promotion) grew in two more times

Alex CHIKahrsa
Oh? When did this happen?

Stephen Sutton
First time was when the 12 Large Summit happen and when Eddie Kingston and Kevin Steen feud happened

Alex CHIKahrsa
Awesome, I remember those! The first time an official singles champion was crowned, and one of the big CHIKARA/ROH crossovers of the time. What was your take on the 12 Large Summit?

Stephen Sutton
it was unique. Never had seen a tournament just like it.

Alex CHIKahrsa
Yeah, it’s one that is held in high regard to this day. And the Kingston/Steen feud?

Stephen Sutton
When Ring Of Honor announced that Eddie was gonna show up and then reading online that he had a face off with then ROH Champion Kevin Steen. I knew I had to get in watching chikara

Alex CHIKahrsa
Awesome! Do you have a favorite match or memory from either 12 Large Summit or Kingston/Steen?

Stephen Sutton
From the Kingston/Steen feud has to be the promo Steen cut saying he was going to turn the Grand Championship into a toy for his son. From the 12 Large Summit has to be the speech Kingston gave after winning the tournament

Alex CHIKahrsa
Nice, those are definitely good moments. I don’t remember if it was the same promo, but I also remember Steen saying he’d wear a mask too only to put on a Bumblebee mask his son owned lol.

Stephen Sutton
that was the same one

Alex CHIKahrsa
Haha, right. So, has anything in CHIKARA stood out to you in the past couple years? Case in point, we’re about halfway through the current season, anything from that?

Stephen Sutton
Gonna pick the story of the Colony.

Alex CHIKahrsa
Nice, the stuff from the splitting off until Top Banana I take it?

Stephen Sutton
It was like how soldier ant was bought back for the flood and unsure how Fire and Silver ant how to reacted

Alex CHIKahrsa
Ah, cool! I remember hearing about that, the whole story lasting through Seasons 14 AND 15 was very interesting. What do you think about the situation with them now, especially with the classic Colony back in KOT this year?

Stephen Sutton
I have the feeling that jealously might show its head and maybe could see the return of the Colony Extreme Force as Arctic Rescue Ant has re appeared

Alex CHIKahrsa
Very true, I found Worker Ant’s blog very curious to say the least. I can’t say I blame him for being a little upset after everything he went through, though. Speaking of KOT this year, what do you think of the trios announced so far? Any favorites, or even an early pick to win?

Stephen Sutton
well obviously people could say the early favourites could be the colony as they are former winners of the tournament. Like the look of team CWC as you have one half of the first ever two campeones de parejas returning plus you have the original divas revolution in there aswell

Alex CHIKahrsa
Very true, between those teams and the number of women’s teams this has been a very exciting lineup so far. Any trios you’d like to see at KOT this year?

Stephen Sutton
Hope once again the UK would be represented with not just Fight Club Pro and Attack Pro Wrestling forming a trio

Alex CHIKahrsa
Yeah, the international flavor has been a great part of KOT especially last year. On that note, being a wrestling fan from the UK, what did you think of CHIKARA having its two tours there so far?

Stephen Sutton
I’m hoping if the promotion tours next I would be able to see a show

Alex CHIKahrsa
Man, I’m sure that would be a great experience! I hear you on that, I haven’t made it to a live show yet either but I’ve heard such great things about the experience. Have you had a chance to go to other wrestling shows?

Stephen Sutton
I do attend my major local promotion when I can

Alex CHIKahrsa
Awesome! Local promotions are a lot of fun, care to share a little more about them?

Stephen Sutton
The name is Revolution Pro Wrestling which started back in 2012 with the major shows being run in London and has so many young talent coming up through the UK scene

Alex CHIKahrsa
Wow, awesome! Am I right in saying this is the RevPro that has entrants in WWE’s Cruiserweight Classic?

Stephen Sutton
It has the current RPW Champion Zack Sabre Jr, in the tournament

Alex CHIKahrsa
Nice! Sabre’s been making a real name for himself lately on the US indy scene as well with big performances in PWG especially. As we start to wrap things up, I’d love to hear about anything else you’d like to say, whether it’s CHIKARA or otherwise!

Stephen Sutton
Have to say another talent which is linked with RPW and deserves an mention is Will Ospreay

Alex CHIKahrsa
Awesome, Will Ospreay has definitely been on my radar lately. Between his NJPW match with Ricochet and Paul Heyman offering him an EVOLVE contract recently, it’s definitely a bright future ahead of him!

Stephen Sutton
well apparently Will has signed that evolve contract

Alex CHIKahrsa
Wow, that’s awesome! Very interesting considering his contract with New Japan, too. Can’t wait to see what he brings to EVOLVE!

Stephen Sutton
plus with PWG BOLA. I think Will could be the next British Import to impress in the USA

Alex CHIKahrsa
Very true! BOLA this year looks to be a very stacked lineup. One more question before we go, to bring this back around to CHIKARA: what are you most looking forward to in regards to CHIKARA? Anything this season or beyond?

Stephen Sutton
It be interesting on where they are going to go with The Colony and with The Nightmare Warriors

Alex CHIKahrsa
Indeed, both have seen some interesting plot twists the past few weeks. I’m especially intrigued by what’s happening with what CHIKARA has been calling the HeXed Men. Well Stephen, I think that about wraps things up! If the CHIKARMY wants to chat with you about CHIKARA, UK wrestling, or anything else, where can they get a hold of you?

Stephen Sutton
They can add me on Facebook or on twitter @SJSutton5150

Alex CHIKahrsa
Awesome! Thanks for taking the time to have a chat, Stephen šŸ™‚

Stephen Sutton
